The card game Rolling Stone is a simple one that kids are sure to love playing for hours on end. It has a similar feel to Slap Jack and Spoons but without the slapping. If you like the card game Go Boom, you’ll find that Rolling Stone is similar but the complete opposite!
Let’s get into how to play and some rule variations.

Setting Up Rolling Stone Card Game
First we’ll cover a four player game. You can see a five and six player game in the variations below.
To start, you need a standard deck of playing cards. We love to play with fun cards to make it, well, more fun. You can shop for cards here. Next, remove the Jokers and all the cards ranked from 2 to 6.
Last, you need to choose a dealer. This can be done with a cut of the deck or any other way you’d like.
Playing Rolling Stone Card Game
To start, the dealer will deal all the cards so that each player has eight cards.
Now the first player chooses a card from her hand to put face up in the middle.

The second player now has to play a card in the same suit as the first card.
When each of the players has placed a card down, then the player who played the highest card gets to pick up the pile and place it beside her face down. This is called taking the trick. Aces are high. She now gets to start a new trick.

When a player can’t follow suit, he must pick up all the cards in the middle and add them to his hand.

After picking up cards, he can then put down a card in the middle to start the next tick.

Winning Rolling Stone
The first player who is able to get rid of all her cards is the winner.
Rolling Stone Variations
Five Player
To play Rolling Stone with five players, remove all the twos, threes and fours. The dealer will pass out all the cards so each player has eight cards.
Six Player
Similar to five player, to set up a six player game of Rolling Stone, you remove all the twos. Each player will still get eight cards to play with.
Points
To play Rolling Stones with points you first need to agree to what point value you will play to. Next, at the end of a round, the winning player receives one point for each of the cards left in the other player’s hands. The player to first reach the agreed on point mark is the winner.
Next Card Rule
In some games, the player who starts the next trick must choose a card from a different suit to start the next trick, if possible. Other games state that you can’t play the same beginning card when you pick up the pile. This rule is to keep the game moving, otherwise you can get stuck going around and around for a long time.
