We love a good mystery here at Family Game Shelf. One of the best mystery games we’ve played is the Unsolved Case Files series. (You can read about Who Murdered Harmony Ashcroft here.) After playing our first one, we all agreed that we wanted to play another. Unsolved Case Files: Honey the Bunny is our second one and in this post, we’ll tell you how to play, what we liked and didn’t like and if it’s worth trying out.
No worries, we won’t give any spoilers so you can relax and read the whole review.

The Plot
Honey the Bunny is the class pet but he is missing! You are tasked by trying to figure out who took Honey and where he might be now.
Setting Up Honey the Bunny
The set up for this game is very simple. You open the case file and pull out the information. There are three envelops that are marked as bonus envelopes and are not to be opened until you reach a certain point in the game.
Next, there is an evidence envelop filled with photographs and other items needed to solve the case. Also in the file are some other photos, witness statements, person of interest statements and other information regarding the case. Last, there is the objective for the first round of the game.

Playing Honey the Bunny
To start, one player will read the objective. In this case, it is to prove that you, as the top suspect, are innocent. Players now go through the evidence and statements and piece together the clues to prove that you are no the guilty one.
Once, players think they have it figured out, they use the QR code on the objective page to fill in what they think is the answer and what proof they have.
If they are correct, the can open the first sealed envelope and move on to the second envelope. Inside, there is a new objective and new evidence that will help solve the second part of the mystery.

On the other hand, if they are not correct, they go back over the evidence and find a new solution and proof.
When they think they have solved the second objective, they again scan the QR code and put in their answer and supporting proof.
When they have solved the second part, they can move on to the second envelop. This envelope contains its own mystery to solve as well as more evidence.
There is a third envelope with yet again a new mystery and evidence.
Winning Honey the Boney
When the players have solved all of the mysteries, they have solved the case and have won the game.
What we Like
First, the quality of this game is top notch. The photographs are sturdy and feel like real photographs. Second, there is a lot of material to go over but not so much that it is overwhelming. You really have to pay attention to what you are looking at and remember things that you have read. We like that there is something for everyone to read and look at.
Next, we love the fact that you have to use the QR code and put in the information. It’s really nice that you can get it wrong without accidentally figuring out the answer and you can try again. There is also a spot to get a clue. This is helpful because there was one point in the game where we were a little confused as what exactly we were supposed to find. The clue was very helpful and we were able to move on with ease.
We also like the added element of the sealed envelopes. This adds to the mystery and we like that you get added evidence as you play. This helps by not overwhelming players as they go through but it also gives you little hints as to what evidence you need to solve that part of the mystery. We also like that in the end, you have to use evidence from the whole kit to solve the puzzle, not just the new evidence.
Last, in the case of the missing Honey the Bunny, we like that it has a family-friendly feel to it. There is all the parts of a more grown up mystery without any of the murder or harshness that there often is in the mystery games.
What We Didn’t Like
To be honest, there isn’t much about this game that wasn’t great. If we had to pick something, I would say that it was a little easy for us. But as we have tried many games like this and the game is aimed at slightly younger kids, this wasn’t unexpected. We were still challenged thought so it was good.
The only other thing was that we were a little lost in one point as to exactly what we were looking for. We used the hint feature and were able to quickly get back on track.
