How to Play the Dice Game Zebra Races

I was thinking about games that start with the letter Z. The only one that I could think of was Zooreka. That had me thinking that there should be a game that involved Zebras. I haven’t found one yet, so I decided to create my own. And since zebras are black and white and dice are also black and white, it seemed only fitting that my zebra themed game should be a family dice game. And that’s how Zebra Races came to be!

Zebra Races is one of the many animal themed dice games that we have- check out Ants, Shark Bite, and Monkey Dice to start.

We know that no two zebras are the same, however, in this dice game you need to have your zebras blend in to win the race!

Supplies

First, you need five dice.

Next, you will need a Zebra Race board. You can download your free Zebra Race game board form our Fun Library for extra fun. (You can get your password by clicking in the black box below.) The game is easy enough to play without the game board but it is easier to keep track of where you are in the game with the board—and where your opponents are. You will also need a mover for each player.

Let the Zebras Race

To start, a player has three turns to roll a small straight, that is 4 dice in order. Example: 1, 2, 3, 4, or 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. By getting a straight, you have opened the gate and let your Zebras out to race. Once your gate is open, that is the end of your turn.

To start Zebra races you need to roll 4 dice in a row
This player has opened the gate.

Next, you have three rolls to get double ones. If you get double ones on roll one or two, you can then roll the remaining dice to try to get double twos. A turn has no more than three dice rolls and used dice can not be rerolled.

Play continues in this manner with players trying to roll double 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, and 6s.

If you roll doubles on turn onw, you can reroll all unusecd dice to try for hte next set of doubles
This lucky player rolled double ones on the first roll. Now he has two rolls to roll the rest of the dice and see if he can get double twos.

Shut the Gate

If double sixes are rolled in either roll one or roll two, a player can roll all the dice for the remaining turns. To shut the gate after the zebras have raced through it, a player needs to roll a large straight, that is all five dice in sequence. The sequence can be 1 through 5 or 2 through 6.

Winning Zebra Races

The first player to get their zebras out of the gate, through the race and then shut the gate behind the zebras is the winner.

If you have more rolls left in your turn after rolling double 6s you can re roll all the dice to try for 5 in a row.
This player can reroll all the dice to try to get 5 dice in a row to win.

  1. Is it correct to assume you are trying to roll the doubles (or straight) in the same roll? You wouldn’t roll the dice, set aside certain numbers, and re-roll the others.
