How to Play Funny Thanksgiving Card Game Gobble

Thanksgiving is a time to gather and be thankful for family. The card game Gobble is an outrageously funny game that players of all ages will love.

I’m thankful that I have great memories of playing this kind of game at my family gatherings over the years. Just some of my favorites to play with the extended family are Blind Poker, 31 card game and Spoons. Games always make the best memories, at least in my opinion.

How to Play Gobble

To start the card game Gobble, deal all the cards out, facedown, into a pile for each player. (Some players might have more cards than others. This is okay and won’t affect the game.) Players do not look at their cards.

One at a time, players take turns flipping over their top card and placing it in the middle pile. The flip must be smooth with no peeking.

When a card with the rank of 2 to 10 is flipped over, no actions are taken. These are safe cards and the next player will then flip over his card.

On the other hand, when a face card, ace or Joker is flipped over the craziness starts. Each card has its own action that must be performed and then the players race to slap their hands on the center pile.

The first player who does the action and slaps their hand on the pile, gets to Gobble all the cards in the stack and add them to the bottom of her personal pile. She then gets to start the next pile by flipping over the top card and placing it in the middle.

The Actions

When the special Thanksgiving cards are turned over, the players must do these actions before slapping their hands on the pile.

Kings – the kings are king birds and players must act like a turkey by flapping their arms like wings.

Queens – the queens want you to eat your carrots and have the players putting their hands over their heads like carrot tops.

Jacks – the jacks love their sweet potato pie and have players rubbing their tummies.

Aces – the aces are the stuffing and have the players hugging their arms across their chests.

Jokers – the Jokers are the gray of the meal and have players smoothing their hands back and forth like smoothing gravy over everything. These are extra special cards. Not only does the player who slaps the pile first get the pile, they also get the top card of every player’s stack.

No Action Penalty

When a player slaps the deck before doing the action, not only does he not get the pile, he must pay a penalty by giving the winner of the pile the top card of his stack.

Winning the Card Game Gobble

There are two ways to win the card game Gobble.

First, a player wins the game when she has gobbled all of the cards.

Second, since it can take a long time to gobble all of the cards, you can set a timer for 20 minutes and the player with the most cards at the end of the time is the winner.

All Gobbled Up

The card game Gobble is all about fun and laughter. You won’t be able to stop yourself from laughing when you see Grandma flapping her arms like a turkey or Uncle Tom with his hands above his head like a carrot. Kids will especially love playing Gobble as they are often better at the game than the adults.
