The Phase 10 Dice

The game comes with 10 unique dice. Four of the dice have the numbers 1 to 4 and two wild spots on them. The other six dice have the numbers 5 to 10 on them. All the dice have the colours red, orange, green and blue on them.

Next, the game also comes with a score sheet. We have our own copy of the score sheet that is easier to use. You can get your copy free in the Fun Library.

The Phase 10 Dice Phases

Just like in the original Phase 10 card game, there are ten phase that need to be met. They are the same as in the card game. They are as follows:

1 – 2 sets of 3
2 – 1 set of 3 and 1 run of 4
3 – 1 set of 4 and 1 run of 4
4 – 1 run of 7
5 – 1 run of 8
6 – 1 run of 9
7 – 2 sets of 4
8 – 7 of all one colour
9 – 1 set of 5 and 1 set of 2
10 – 1 set of 5 and 1 set of 3

The sets are dice that show the same number on them. Similar, the runs are dice with numbers that are in a row, for example 3 – 4 – 5 – 6.

Playing Phase 10 Dice

To start, the first player rolls all ten Phase 10 dice. She now can decide to set aside any dice she would like and reroll any. After her second roll, she can choose again to set aside any dice she wants. For her third roll, she can choose to reroll any dice that she has already set aside. After her third roll, she will score her roll. If she hasn’t completed her phase then she receives no score. Play now moves to the next player.

A player needs to complete a phase to score. Similarly, a player needs to complete a phase before moving to the next phase. For example, the first phase is 2 sets of 3. If a player rolls three 8s and three 1s then she will score and move on to phase 2 –1set of 3 and 1 run of 4—on her next turn. On the other hand, if after her third roll, she doesn’t have two sets of three then her score is zero and will have to try to complete the phase on her next turn.

A player can only complete one phase in one turn. If you are lucky enough to roll the phase you are working on in your first roll, you can either score or try to increase your score.

The phases must be completed in order.

Scoring Phase 10 Dice

Next comes the scoring at the end of a turn, if a player has completed his phase, he scores. The score is the total of the die used in completing the phase. The dice not used are not counted. For example, if a player has rolled three 1s and three 5s for a 2 sets of 3, then his score would be 18.

When wild dice are used, they score zero. So if a set is 10 – wild – wild the set would only be worth 10 points.

Unlike, the card game, there are bonus in Phase 10 Dice. The first bonus can be earned after completing the first 5 phases. When a player’s score is over 220 points, the player earns a 40 point bonus. The second bonus is for the first player who finishes all 10 phases. This bonus is worth 40 points.

Ending a Game

When one player finishes all 10 phase, they cause the game to end. All other players now have one more turn to try to complete the phase that they are on. If a player is successful in completing their phase, they get to score and get another turn to try to get the next phase. A player can continue taking turns until they are not able to score for the phase they are one. When a player can not complete a phase in three rolls, then his game is over and his score is summed.

Winning Phase 10 Dice

When all players have a final score, the player with the highest score is the winner.

Fun note: the highest possible score is 649 points.

Phase 10 Dice Solo Variation

If you’re looking for a solo game, you’re in luck because you can play Phase 10 Dice as a single player game. The goal is to see how high of a score you can get. To start, all the rules of regular Phase 10 Dice are in play. Next, you need to keep track of any time that you fail to make the phase you’re working on in the three rolls. At the end of the game, you will need to subtract 5 points for each fail from your total score. The second rule that is different, is that to get the finish first bonus, you need to complete Phase 10 on your first try.

What We Liked

First, it’s nice to have a dice game that has different dice. It’s also nice to have a dice game that has a bit of strategy to it. The tin that it comes in is also nice.

What We Didn’t Like

First, the score sheet is very small. Of course, this is so it fits in the tin. But the spaces are just so small. The score sheet that we’ve made in the Fun Library is a large size and can be folded to fit in the tin. Next, there is a lot of math in this game. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it does make it long as you have to add everything up.

Next, the rules could be a little more clear. For example, it doesn’t say if the runs all need to be the same colour or not. Last, because the turns take longer when it’s not your turn, especially if you’re playing with more than two players, you tend to loose interest.

Is Phase 10 Dice worth adding to your Family Game Shelf?

If your family loves dice games and are wizzes at math, I would say make room on your Family Game Shelf for Phase 10 Dice game. It has a small box so it won’t take a lot of space, it travels well and will fill a game night.
