We have another sport dice game for you today: Baseball dice! This game has been around almost as long as baseball itself. If you’re a baseball fan, then this game is a must play for sure. If you’re not then it’s still a fun game.
Baseball Dice is just one of the many sport dice games that we have. You’d think I was really into sports with games like Tennis, Hockey, Curling, Tug of War, the Big List of golf games and of course our Whacky Putt mini golf game (this one is more my speed!) With that said, we really enjoy this baseball game.
In this post we’ll cover the rules, how to play, where to get your game board and the variations I found for Baseball Dice. So get ready for spring training, lazy summer games or hearty games in the off season.

What you Need for Baseball Dice
You will need two dice and a game board. You could play without the game board but you’d have to remember all the hits and it’s much more fun with the board. Luckily, we have a free game board and score sheet in the Fun Library. (You can get your password in the black box below.) If you prefer, you could purchase a wooden game board, although I haven’t found one yet that comes with the full game instructions. There are some beautiful wood game boards on Amazon here; Canadian here.
If you’re looking for instructions on how to make your own baseball game visit the post here where I go step by step in how we made our game.
Playing Baseball Dice
First, I need to confess that I’m not a baseball player or watcher although I did play in school gym class. So, for this tutorial, I will assume that you don’t know much about baseball either. (If you do please feel free to fly over the parts you don’t need.) I will also assume that you’re working with our game sheet. The rules and how to play are the same no matter what board you play with.
To start, Baseball Dice is a two player game. (You could play with more just on two teams.) First, you need to decide who will play first. The first player will be the visiting team and the second player will be the home team.
On your first turn, you will roll both dice. Next, check the chart to see what kind of hit you have. There are a variety of hits ranging from a strike out to a home run. You will move your first player marker according. See the chart below.

For those who are not familiar with baseball teams I’ll sum up the moves.
First, a home run is when your player makes it all the way around the bases and gets a score. Second, a double hit is when your player moves to the second base. When you roll a walk you move your player to the first base. A single also moves your player to the first base. A triple will have you move your player to third base.
Fly outs, pop outs, strike out and ground outs all count as an out. When a double play is rolled, not only is your batter out but if you have any players on base one of them is also out. In a sacrifice out, your batter is out but any players on bases move one base.
When you have players on base, they only move if another player forces them to move. For example, if you have a player on first base he doesn’t move until another batter hits and moves to first base. This also moves any player on any other base. When you roll where your batter moves more than one base, say a triple, all other players on base move the same amount. For example, if you have a player on first base and you roll a home run not only does your batter cross home plate but the player on first would also cross it.

When you have a player cross home base, you mark it as a score. Similarly, if you have a player who is out, you mark it as well. As in real baseball, you get three outs per inning. When you reach three outs, your turn is over. You move the score marker to reflect how many runs you got in that inning. If a sacrifice out was rolled, the out counts first so any player that would have crossed home does not count as a run.

The home team now has a chance to score in the same way as the visiting team. You continue to the end of nine innings.
Winning Baseball Dice
After the nine innings have been played, the player with the most runs wins the game.
Ties
If there is a tie after the ninth inning, you play one more inning to see who can score more runs. That player is now the winner.
Baseball Dice Variations
The Baseball Dice game has been around almost as long as the sport itself so there may be different results for rolls. For example, there is an error roll in some games as well as a steal in others.
Home Baseball
The Home Baseball dice game has a much simpler roll chart. In it a sum of 2 is a wild pitch and all players move one base. Three is a triple. Four is a double. Five is a walk. Six is a fly out and seven is a ground out. Eight is a single and nine is a strike out. Ten is a foul ball and you get to roll again. Eleven is a double play and a twelve is a home run.
A Home Run
Whether you like to play in person or not, Baseball Dice is a fun game for players of all ages. It’s prefect for hot summer afternoons or when you’re dreaming of hot summer afternoons.
