How to Play the Crazy Quilt Card Game

A few weeks ago we told you how to play the solitaire game Carpet. Today we have the more complicated version of that game that we felt deserved its own post. Crazy Quilt is the name of the game.

The Crazy Quilt game looks like a quilt and fits in with the solitaire games Golf Solitaire, Flower Garden and Mini Golf card game. It’s also nostalgic for me as my Gram was well known for her quilts.

In this post we’ll cover what you need, how to play and how to win the Crazy Quilt Solitaire  game. Let’s get to it.

Setting up the Crazy Quilt

The set up for this game is a little more involved than some of the other games but once you get the hang of it it goes quickly. To start, make a row of 8 cards with the first card in the row being vertical like you would expect. Now the second card in the row goes sideways. Finish the row in the same alternating pattern.

Now make a second row of 8 cards below the first row. You will place the first card in this row sideways and the second vertically. Continue the pattern across the row.

For the third row, start with a vertical card and carry across.

Using this alternating pattern lay out cards so you have 8 rows of 8 cards. This should look like a crazy quilt.

The last thing to set up is the foundation piles. For this set the four aces on one side of the quilt and the kings on the other side.

Playing the Crazy Quilt Card Game

The goal of the game is to get all of the cards on the foundation piles. Because this can be a challenge, you can also play to see how many cards you can get on the foundation piles.

The ace foundation piles go up from the ace to the king and you must be play cards according to suit. So you can place the 2 of hearts then the 3 of hearts onto the ace of hearts. Similarly, the king foundation piles go in descending order. So you can place the queen of clubs on the king of clubs and then the jack on top of the queen.

To move a card from the quilt, its top or bottom must be free. The top or bottom is the short size of the card, so if the cards were in your hand you would be holding them by the bottom. If the top and bottom of a card is blocked by another card, then you can’t move it to the foundation piles.

The Stock Pile

Once all the cards form the quilt that can be moved are moved to the foundation piles, you can use the stock pile. To do this, you flip over the top card and see if you can be place it on one of the foundation piles. If this creates an opportunity to move a card form the quilt, then you can do so. Otherwise, flip over the next card on the stock pile.

When the two foundation piles of the matching suit have the correct cards, you can move one pile over to the other to close it and start the second one over. For example if the ace foundation of spades is at 6 and the king foundation of spades is at 7 then you could move the ace pile to the king pile and start the start with a new ace of spades. Or you could move the king pile to the ace pile and start a new king pile. Of course, the new start card (the ace of king) would have to be from the stock pile or a free card in the quilt.

Once a foundation pile is finished, turn it over and set it aside. You can no longer move any cards to it.

When you reach the end of the stock pile, you can then pick it back up, flip it over, and start going through the pile one card at a time as you did before.

When there are no move moveable cards in either the stock pile or the quilt the game is over. Similarly, if you manage to place all of the cards from the stock pile and the quilt onto foundation piles, the game is over.
