Tennis can be a fun, engaging and exhausting game. In Tennis Dice Game we bring all the fun and none of the exhaustion (or sprained wrists) of the on-court game.
For a non-sports girl, I have brought you a lot of sports dice games including Golf dice, Straight Golf, Winter Olympic dice games (including Ski Jump and Bobsled) and two of my favorites Hockey Dice and Whacky Putt, the mini golf game. I guess I find sports more fun when they’re played out with dice.
What you Need for Tennis Dice Game
To play, you will need two standard dice and something to keep score with. Tennis Dice is a two player game.
How to Play Tennis Dice
To start, each player rolls one die. The high roll gets to go first, or serve first.
Next, the first player rolls one die. If the roll is three and under, the second player rolls one die. On the other hand, if the first roll is 4 or more then the second player rolls both dice.

The idea is for the second player to roll the same or more than the first player. When rolling two dice, the dice are added together for the must meet or beat number.
Next, player one rolls both dice (if the rolls before have climbed to 4 or more) and tried to roll the same amount or more.

When a player rolls under what the last dice roll was, then they have missed the ball and the other player gains a point. The player who has won the point then gets to “serve” with one die as before and the process starts over.

Scoring Tennis Dice
To make it more like tennis, the first point that a player earns is worth 15 points. The second point is worth 30 points and the third point is 40. When a player has gotten to 40, then she needs only one more point to win. However, the rules of tennis say that a player needs to win by two points, so she may need to win more points. When a player has no points, they are said to have love. So a score of 30 Love would mean that one player has scored two times and the other hasn’t scored yet.
Of course, if this is too confusing for you, you could play that one point it one. A player would need to score 4 points to win the game. You can keep the rule that a player needs to win by two points or skip this rule for an easier game.
Winning Tennis Dice
To win a Tennis match, you need to win 2 out of three games.
Badminton Dice
If you’re more of a Badminton fan (as I am) then you can play Badminton dice instead. You play the same way as tennis but the scoring is different. When a player doesn’t roll the same or higher than the roll before, then the first player gets one point. To win a game of Badminton, you need to score 21 points, but must win by two points. And to win a Badminton match you need to win 2 out of 3 sets.
Out of Bounds
If you would like to introduce a court area, you will need a piece of paper with a line down the center. Now, players need to roll the dice on their side of the paper. If a dice lands on the line, on the other side or off the paper, then the other player gets a point.
That’s a Set
Tennis Dice is a lot less enteric than court tennis, but maybe even more fun. Find the right set of rules for your family and get ready to roll—the dice and the laughter.
To make the game even more fun, try getting dice in tennis yellow. You can shop for dice here. Canadians can shop dice here. And if you want to see the court tennis rules, you can see them here.
