What You Need for STAIRS Dice Game

To play, you will need six dice per player. (If you don’t have that many dice you can shop here; Canadians, here or you can scroll down to the variation to see how to  play with less dice.) You will also need a pen and paper to keep score.

The Story

Oh no! You’re down at the dock and you’ve forgotten something in the cottage. You must now race your opponents to be the first one up all those stairs and be the hero of the dock.

Playing STAIRS

To start, everyone rolls all of their dice at the same time. The aim is to get the numbers 1 to 6 in order.

When a player rolls all of her dice and there is a one, she sets that dice on the side. If there is a two she can set that dice aside too. She can also set aside any of the other numbers as long as the one before it is already set aside. For example, if a player has rolled a 1, 2, 4 she can set aside the 1 and 2 but not the 4 as there is no 3 yet. When all of her useable dice are set aside, she rolls the remaining dice and tries to get the rest of the numbers in order.

When a player has rolled all of the number from 1 to 6, the round is over. The player who was the first to get the straight gets the letter S under her name.

Now the second round starts. All players start over and roll all of their dice, again trying to be the first to roll the straight in the same way.

If the player who has an S under his name wins the next round, he gets a T under his name. If the winning player has no letter, then he receives an S. Letters are collected in order to spell STAIRS.

Winning STAIRS Dice Game

The first player to collect all of the letters in STAIRS is the winner. She has reached the cottage first and collects the missing item and returns to the dock as a hero.

STAIRS Variations

If you don’t have enough dice on hand for everyone to have six dice, then you can play STAIRS this way. Each player needs to have just one die. All players roll at the same time as before. Players need to roll a one before rolling a two. They need to roll the numbers 1 to 6 in order. The first player to get all the numbers wins the round and receives a letter. When the new round begins, all player must start at one again.
