How to Play the This That & Everything Merry X-mas Edition

We love Christmas around here, and of course we love games so when there’s a Christmas game to play we’re all over it. The This That & Everything Merry X-mas edition game is the latest one that we’ve been playing.

In this post we’ll cover how to play, the rules and what we thought of the game. This holiday game adds to our Big List of Christmas games that you can check out here.

The Object of This That & Everything

First, you make teams to play. The object is to be the team that gets the most points by guessing the most holiday words and phrases.

How to Play This That & Everything

To start, players pick one team to go first. That team will then choose one player to be the describer. The describer then picks up the top card from the deck and reads it over. When she feels ready, the timer is started and she then has 30 seconds to get her team to guess the words on the card. The words can be guessed in any order.

When the time is up, the team gets one point for every correct word or phrase. If they have guessed all of the words on the card, then they score a bonus point.

There are cards that have cute pictures on them. When a team gets one of these cards, they score 2 points for each correct guess.

These cards each have a picute on them.

Now it is the next team’s turn.

Winning This That & Everything Merry X-mas Edition

First, before you start, you need to agree on how many rounds you would like to play. The score sheet has space for 10 rounds but if you’d like to play a shorter game, then you can choose a different amount of rounds.

The team with the most points after the rounds is the winner.

What We Like

First, we love a good Christmas game and a word game so this game checked both boxes. Next, the game is very quick to play, making it prefect for the holiday season. There are lots of cards to play with a large variety of holiday coverage. Last, the quality is topnotch. The art work on the cards is great too, the words are in a large, bold font with a background that is festive but not distracting.

What We Don’t Like

First, the box is huge. I believe that they have fixed this since our game was published. It now comes in a card box. Next, as with a lot of trivia type games they are just some items on the cards that we have no idea what they are. Anyone know what “crèche” is? Or what “Balthasar” is? Of course, like I said, this is part of the game.

Last, the scoring for the cards with the pictures on them seems off. If one team gets one of these cards and the other team doesn’t, the first team will win hands down. It might balance out, but we’ve found that it often doesn’t. There is nothing less fun than knowing you don’t have a hope in winning a game. To fix this, we have put that the clue that the picture is touching is worth 2 points, not everyone on the card.

And as a note, the 30 second timer is a little short for some of the cards so we sometimes play with 60 seconds on the clock. This is especially good if you’re playing with kids.

Is It Worth Adding This That & Everything Merry X-mas Edition to your Family Game Shelf?

First, I’m going with the assumption that we are talking about the new card box. So, would we recommend adding this game to your Family Game Shelf? Yes, if you love Christmas games, this one makes a light, fast game to play. Of course, you’re likely only to play at one time of year, but with the new packaging it wouldn’t take long. Also, if you only play one time of year, you’re less likely to remember what is on each card.
