How to Play the Jailed Dice Game

Here at Family Game Shelf we love dice games and can’t help but make up some of our very own and today we have a new one for you that just came to me while sitting on my back deck enjoying the last bit of later summer. It’s called Jailed and is easy to learn with a push your luck style.

Curious about what other games I’ve created? The list includes Big Scoops, Blizzard, Shark Bite, and our most famous Whacky Putt the dice mini golf game. There are more but we want to get back to Jailed.

What You Need for Jailed

You will need 8 dice and a score sheet to play. If you need some new dice, we love to play so everyone has a set in their favourite colour, you can shop dice hereCanadians here.

Playing Jailed

To start, decide who goes first. A dice roll to see who gets the highest is a great way to decide. On your turn, you will roll all 8 dice. Any 6s are jailed and will be set aside. If there are three or more 6s then your turn is over and your score is 0.

This player rolled three 6s and scores 0

On the other hand, if you have rolled less than three 6s, look for pairs. You must set aside at least one pair for each roll. You may choose to stop at any time and you may choose to reroll some pairs if you think you can roll a higher pair. Remember you have to set aside at least one pair each roll.

If you roll and there are no matches, then your turn is over and you will score for the pairs you already have. Also, if you roll and there are more 6s, you add them to the jail. If there are three or more dice in your jail your turn is over and you score 0.

When your turn is over, each add up each the total of each pair and that is your score for the round.

Special Rolls

When you roll a double pair in the same roll the score for those pairs are doubled. For example, if you roll two pairs of 3s then score would be 12 and then doubled to 24. The double pair must be rolled in the same roll and can’t be add to after or from a previous roll.

The full jail roll is the second special roll. This happens when you roll 5 or more 6s in a single roll. This means that not only is your jail full, but your score for the game is wiped back to 0.

When your turn is over, the dice move to the player on your left and that player sees how many pairs he can roll.

Winning the Jailed Dice Game
