5 More Pen and Paper Games to Play This Fall

Now that the weather has started changing and we’re going to be spending more time indoors, I thought I’d share 5 more pen and paper games with you.

The fist five included Nim, Hold the Line, Knight Chase and Number chain. You can learn about them here. You can also check out our pen and paper scorer game here.

These new five games are Black Hole, Crossed, Sprots, Bridges and Splatter.

In this post we’ll cover how to play, the rules and ow to win each of the games. Let’s get into it.

Pen and Paper Games: Black Hole

Thie first up is the Black Hole game.

To start, you will need to make a pyramid of circles with one at the top and six circles on the bottom. Each player needs their own pen in a different colour.

To play, each player will write the numbers 1 to 10 in their own colour. Players take alternating turns. The numbers should be done in order starting at 1 and working their way to 10.

A player can choose to put their number in any available hole. When both players have written their number ten, there will be one empty hole: the Black Hole.

Players will add up any of their numbers that are touching the Black Hole to get their score. The player with the lowest score wins.

Pen and Paper Games: Bridges

Bridges is out next pen and paper game.

To play, you will need to draw a shape. The shape can be any shape that you like. You will now draw several lines from one side of the shape to the other until you have lots of spaces within the shape. It is best if there are 30 to 50 spaces within the shape.

To play each player will have their own colour. On your turn, choose a space to start in then draw a line that goes over at least one spot to land in a third spot, forming a bridge over the middle space(s). A spot can only be used once. The last player who can make a bridge is the winner.

Pen and Paper Games: Crossed

To start you will need a square outline of four dots on each side. Each player will need a pen in their own colour.

On your turn, connect one dot to another one using a straight line. If your line crosses your opponent’s line, you get 1 point. If your line crosses one of your lines, you score 2 points.

When all the dots have been used, add up your score. The player with the highest score is the winner.

Pen and Paper Games: Sprouts

Our next pen and paper game is Sprouts.

Players will need a pen in their own colour for this game. To start, you will draw two dots and then draw a line between them. You will now draw a dot in the middle of the line you just made.

Player two will now use two of the dots to make a line connecting them and draw a dot in the middle of that line. Lines do not need to be straight. The lines and dots can’t intersect, and a dot must only have three lines touching it.

The last player who created a line wins.

Pen and Paper Games:  Splatter

Our last pen and paper game is Splatter. It’s the most colourful of the games.

To play, you first start by making a grid of squares. You can have as many squares as you’d like. A 6 x 6 grid makes a nice game. Next, players take turns putting a dot of their colour in one square until the grid is filled. Or you can have one player fill in all the squares with the two colors and the other player gets to start.

Now it’s time to play.

On your turn, you choose a square that has your coloured dot in it to splatter. You can splatter by colouring in just the square you chose or by colouring it in and all the empty squares touching it, including squares with your opponents colour in it.  You can only start a splatter with a square that has your colour.

The player who has the last un-splattered dot is the winner.
