What you Need for Hockey Dice

For this game you need two dice and a score sheet. Our handy cheat sheet is also a good idea. You can get your core sheet and cheat sheet in the Fun Library. See the black box below to get your password.

Hockey Dice Set Up

First, decide if you are playing as individuals or are going to play on teams. It is more fun to come up with team names and player names—even if you are playing as individuals.

Next, write the names of the teams on a score sheet. You will need a place for the team name, the player’s names and a space to keep track of goals and penalties.

Last, it is a good idea to have the numbers 1 to 6 written down and to cross them off as each round is played to keep track of the rounds.

Playing Hockey Dice

First, to decide who goes first, a member from each team rolls a dice. The highest number goes first.

Next, the first player rolls both dice. To score a goal, a player must have a sum of nine or more. If the sum is less than nine, there is no goal—the player misses.

Special Rolls

There are many special rolls in hockey dice.

Doubles

First, if doubles are rolled there are penalties according to this list:
Ones is a penalty for high sticking.
Twos are a penalty for cross checking.
Threes are a penalty for tripping.
Fours are a penalty for slashing.

When a player rolls a penalty, place a P in the penalty box on the score sheet. This means that the player misses a turn. After a player has finished his penalty (misses a turn), cross off the P in the penalty box and the player is free to roll on his next turn.

Doubles Adding More than 9

When doubles are rolled that add up to more than 9, then the player has scored a hat trick! That player then gets 3 points added to their goal score.

Sum of 6

When the dice roll adds up to 6, it is half time. The player must do 5 jumping jacks or sing a song of his or hers choice.

Sum of 5

Hockey wouldn’t be hockey without a fight so when the sum of the dice is 5 then that player is in a fight. The player who rolled the sum of five now gets to choose a player to fight with. Next, both players roll a dice. The player with the highest roll wins the fight and then other player gets a penalty. That player misses her next turn.

Hockey dice showing a two and three that add up to five. Then a dice showing a 2 and a 4
The dice added up to 5 so the player had a fight. The player on the left lost and now is in the penalty box.

Ending a Hockey Dice Game

A game of Hockey dice is over after six rounds.

Hockey dice rolls showing different rolls. ! is a 2 and 5. 2 is two ones. 3 is a 3 and 6. 4 is double fours.
1 – a miss 2 – penalty for cross checking 3 – score! 4 – penalty for slashing

Winning Hockey Dice

The player with the most goals at the end of the six rounds is the winner.

Ties and Overtime

When the game ends in a tie, you can leave it that all teams that are tied win.

On the other hand, if you want to continue, you can go into Overtime. This means another three rounds are played. The player with the most goals wins.

If there is still a tie then players or teams go into a shootout. Each player or team rolls a dice, highest roll wins.

Announcing the Play

To make Hockey Dice more fun and more hockey-like, it is best to announce each players turn as they would on TV or on the radio. You can choose one person to be the announcer or you can each announce your own turn or have a mix of both.

Some example calls for the teams of Mommy Ducks VS Slashing Sams are:

The Mommy Ducks have control of the puck, she shoots and she scores!

The Slashers have the puck, he winds up and shoots—oh and he gets a penalty for cross checking.

The Ducks have the puck, she shoots, oh and she misses.

The Slasher is out of the penalty box and he gets the puck and shoots and misses.

Now, when a sum of five is rolled, it is fun for everyone to chant “fight, fight, fight.”

It’s Hockey Night in the House

The next time you’re in the mood for hockey, instead of lacing up the skates or paying big money for tickets, you can gather round the table with some dice. Be rowdy and fun and I can assure you, everyone will love chanting “fight, fight, fight” with no blood shed. Hockey will never be the same.
